Vertical forward integration
When a large bakery buys a flour mill, it is an example of vertical forward integration. Vertical integration refers to a strategy where a company expands its operations either forward towards the customer (downstream) or backward towards suppliers (upstream). In this case, the bakery is integrating forward by acquiring a supplier (the flour mill) in order to gain more control over its supply chain and ensure a more reliable source of flour for its production process.
